The Karnataka High Court delivered a significant blow to Elon Musk’s X Corp on Wednesday, dismissing their legal challenge against the Indian government’s authority to issue takedown orders. The court unequivocally stated that the regulation of social media content is essential. The court emphasized that social media platforms cannot operate without oversight, highlighting that every nation exercises regulatory control. The bench noted that unregulated content fosters lawlessness, while regulated content safeguards liberty and societal order. Further, the court declared that no social media platform is exempt from the laws of the land. The court specifically noted that X complies with similar regulatory frameworks in the United States but resists conforming to India’s legal standards.
