Meta is preparing to introduce an AI helper, named ‘Writing Help,’ within WhatsApp chats. This new feature aims to assist users in composing messages correctly, correcting grammatical errors, and modifying the tone of messages to suit their preferences before sending.
Writing Help is currently undergoing testing on WhatsApp Beta (Android). When a user types a message, a small pen icon will appear in place of the sticker icon. Clicking this icon will send the message to Meta AI, which will generate three new versions of the message. These versions may include options such as professional, supportive, funny, or rephrased text. Users can select one of these options and even edit it further. The recipient of the message will not be aware that AI was used to generate the text.
Meta has stated that Writing Help will operate on private processing technology. This means that message requests will be encrypted and sent via an anonymous route, preventing any link to a specific user or source. Furthermore, WhatsApp claims that it does not save data and will only display AI suggestions when the user actively utilizes Writing Help.
This feature is expected to be beneficial for those who want to appear more professional in business chats, add humor to conversations with friends, or who sometimes struggle with how to phrase a message. Writing Help is currently available to select beta testers. It may undergo further changes and receive new tones before its public rollout. The feature will be off by default and is entirely optional. The app will never send AI-generated text without user permission. In essence, WhatsApp’s new Writing Help feature can customize your chats to be professional, fun, or supportive, with the user always in control.
