A devastating earthquake in Afghanistan has tragically claimed over 1,400 lives as of Tuesday, with thousands more injured. The disaster struck eastern Afghanistan on Monday, initially resulting in over 800 fatalities and injuring more than 2,800 individuals. Rescue operations are underway, but the challenging terrain has hindered efforts in remote villages. A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the region on Monday morning, with tremors felt across the area, including parts of Pakistan. This was followed by a series of aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4 to 5.

In response to the unfolding crisis, India has swiftly extended humanitarian assistance to support relief efforts. The Ministry of External Affairs announced India’s commitment to aid Afghanistan during this difficult time, sharing images of trucks loaded with essential supplies. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, expressing condolences and confirming India’s support. India has already delivered 1,000 family tents to Kabul and is moving 15 tonnes of food material from Kabul to Kunar. Further relief supplies will be sent from India starting the following day. India stands in solidarity with Afghanistan during this challenging period.
