Davos, Switzerland – Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng took center stage at the 2026 World Economic Forum annual meeting, articulating a robust defense of open markets and multilateral governance in the face of global headwinds.

Drawing from President Xi Jinping’s influential 2017 Davos address, He highlighted China’s steadfast support for multilateralism and free trade. Over the years, Xi has introduced four pivotal global initiatives addressing climate change, connectivity, security, and development – offering actionable blueprints for a fractured world.

In his keynote, He presented four strategic pillars. Firstly, resolute backing for free trade to propel inclusive globalization. Amid tariff wars and deglobalization fears, he advocated joint efforts to dismantle barriers and integrate economies.

Secondly, firm endorsement of multilateral frameworks to refine international trade systems, making them fairer and more effective. He Lifeng pointed to the need for reformed global institutions that reflect today’s economic realities.

Third, embracing win-win cooperation to broaden collaboration scopes and jointly solve development hurdles. China’s experiences in poverty alleviation and digital economy growth exemplify scalable models for others.

Fourth, upholding mutual respect through dialogue and consultation to navigate divergences wisely. He stressed that respectful negotiations can bridge ideological gaps and prevent escalatory conflicts.

Attendees from business, government, and academia praised the speech for its clarity and timeliness. As economic nationalism rises, He Lifeng’s message reinforces China’s intent to lead by example in promoting a rules-based global order.
