Contrary to popular belief, China’s greatest adversary isn’t a nation like the United States or India, but rather the vast Taklamakan Desert. This desert poses significant challenges to China, prompting the country to undertake the ambitious Great Green Wall project. This initiative involves the creation of a massive ‘shelter belt’ designed to combat the desert’s encroachment.
The Taklamakan Desert, situated near the Xinjiang region’s Makit County, is the focus of this defensive effort. To counter the sandstorms emanating from the desert, China has constructed the world’s second-largest green wall in this area. This green belt, the Great Green Wall, stretches approximately 3,046 kilometers and plays a crucial role in preventing the desert from expanding. It stands as the second-largest wall of its kind globally.
