A shooting and arson incident occurred at a church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, a location of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel. The attack resulted in five fatalities and eight injuries. Despite America’s predominantly Christian population, the number of attacks on churches has been rising. A Family Research Council (FRC) report released on August 11, 2024, indicated that 415 attacks on churches took place in America in 2024. These attacks included vandalism, arson, bomb threats, and shootings.

According to a 2024 Pew Research Center report, the United States is a Christian-majority nation, with 62% of the population identifying as Christian. Additionally, 2% are Jewish, 1% Muslim, 1% Buddhist, and 1% Hindu. Approximately 29% are religiously unaffiliated. The Family Research Council (FRC) has been tracking attacks on churches of all denominations in America since 2018 as part of its Hostility Against Churches report series, with the total number of such attacks reaching 1,384.
