Thousands of delegates were forced to evacuate the COP30 climate summit site in Belém, Brazil, on Thursday after a fire erupted within one of the event’s pavilions. The incident, which began around 2 p.m. local time, sent plumes of thick smoke through the convention center, triggering alarms and halting crucial climate negotiations. Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, successfully extinguishing the blaze within minutes. Initial investigations suggest the fire may have originated from malfunctioning electrical equipment, potentially a faulty microwave. While thirteen individuals received treatment for smoke inhalation, no serious injuries have been reported. This disruption occurred as over 50,000 participants gathered to discuss global greenhouse gas emission targets. The venue has previously encountered challenges, including waterlogging from heavy rains and issues with its air conditioning and catering. Organizers have assured that the summit will resume following thorough safety inspections.
