A wave of economic nationalism is sweeping across India amidst escalating tensions with the United States. The imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian goods by the US, spearheaded by President Donald Trump, has ignited widespread anger, prompting calls for a boycott of American companies and products. This situation is further complicated by an additional 25% duty levied by Trump. American corporations operating in India, including major brands like Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Subway, KFC, and McDonald’s, are facing increasing pressure and the threat of consumer boycotts. Prominent figures, such as yoga guru Ramdev, are actively leading the movement, urging Indians to shun US products. This sentiment mirrors similar consumer boycotts in other countries, though the impact could be more severe in India, with its vast population of 1.5 billion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged the adoption of ‘swadeshi’ products, urging citizens to support Indian-made goods.
