Brazil’s Supreme Court has sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and 3 months in prison on charges of plotting a coup. Four out of five judges on the Supreme Court found him guilty. The 70-year-old Bolsonaro allegedly planned to overthrow the new government of President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva after losing the 2022 elections. The maximum sentence for this conspiracy could have been 43 years, but the sentence was reduced considering his age and health. Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest and has denied any wrongdoing. He will appeal the decision to a panel of 11 Supreme Court justices.
