Former Diplomat Vikas Swarup Responds to Peter Navarro’s Criticism of India’s Russian Oil Trade

This statement followed White House trade advisor Peter Navarro’s criticism of India’s trade policies and its oil purchases from Russia. Swarup warned that the Trump administration is attempting to pressure the Indian government, referencing Navarro’s remarks. Navarro has been a vocal critic of India, labeling New Delhi the “maharaja of tariffs” and condemning its Russian oil purchases. Swarup responded strongly, stating India’s commitment to strategic autonomy and its refusal to be dictated by any nation. He expressed disappointment over the strained relationship, noting the lack of progress on a trade deal despite the rapport between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump. While hoping for a solution, Swarup emphasized that Navarro’s comments were unhelpful. Navarro justified the 50% tariff on imports from India, accusing the country of profiting from Russian oil.
