The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to significantly enhance its aerial combat capabilities with the upcoming acquisition of approximately 700 Astra Mark 2 air-to-air missiles. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this advanced missile boasts an extended range of over 200 kilometers, providing IAF pilots with a formidable advantage in beyond-visual-range (BVR) engagements. This strategic move follows recent successes where the IAF demonstrated its long-range engagement prowess, highlighting the evolving landscape of aerial warfare. The Astra Mark 2 will be integrated into frontline fighter fleets, including Sukhoi and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), bolstering India’s indigenous defense manufacturing prowess and its ability to maintain a technological edge. The DRDO’s proposal for this enhancement underscores a commitment to bolstering national security through advanced, self-reliant defense solutions. This development aims to counter potential threats and ensure strategic superiority in the region.
