In a boost to longstanding friendship, Seychelles President Patrick Herminie will undertake a week-long state visit to India from February 5-10 at the invitation of PM Narendra Modi. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the schedule, noting it as Herminie’s inaugural trip post his October 2024 inauguration, timed to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations.

High-level engagements form the core of the visit. Herminie will meet President Droupadi Murmu and hold bilateral talks with PM Modi, covering critical topics from trade to security and international affairs. These discussions aim to elevate the strategic partnership in the Indian Ocean.

The president’s agenda extends to Chennai and Mumbai for business forums, highlighting opportunities in commerce and investment. MEA spokesperson emphasized how this journey will accelerate comprehensive cooperation between the two maritime allies.

As a cornerstone of India’s Indian Ocean strategy, Seychelles embodies the essence of Vision SAGAR – promoting shared security and growth. The nation also represents India’s solidarity with the Global South. This visit builds directly on Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s October trip to Seychelles, where he attended Herminie’s swearing-in and held productive meetings.

At State House in Victoria, Dhankhar and Herminie explored avenues to deepen ties, extending India’s best wishes. They reaffirmed commitments to regional peace and development. Separate talks with Seychelles VP Vincent Meriton focused on cultural exchanges and bilateral facets.

Historical bonds trace back to 1976, when India celebrated Seychelles’ independence with naval participation from INS Nilgiri. Missions were set up in Victoria (1979) and New Delhi (2008), laying the foundation for today’s robust relations.

Observers see this visit as a catalyst for expanded collaboration, from defense pacts to economic ventures, ensuring stability and progress across the ocean expanse.
