Magnitude 6.1 Quake Jolts Mindanao Days After Deadly 7.5 Tremor

The southern Philippines felt a jolt on Friday as a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Mindanao region. This latest seismic event follows a devastating 7.5 magnitude quake just over a week ago, which caused widespread destruction and prompted mass evacuations. Preliminary reports on the immediate impact of the 6.1 tremor are still being assessed, but the event highlights the ongoing geological activity in this seismically active area. The region is no stranger to powerful earthquakes, situated within the Pacific’s volatile “Ring of Fire.” The previous powerful quake on October 10th resulted in significant infrastructure damage, including to schools and a hospital, and widespread power outages. It also triggered a tsunami alert, warning of potentially life-threatening waves and leading to urgent evacuations of coastal communities. Schools in Davao City were temporarily closed as a safety measure.
