The Nepali government has lifted its ban on social media applications following escalating protests, primarily led by Gen Z, which led to violent clashes with law enforcement. The Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, announced the decision and appealed to the Gen Z protesters to cease their demonstrations. The announcement followed an emergency cabinet meeting. Previously, reports indicated that Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli had resisted lifting the ban despite the ongoing protests that resulted in 19 deaths. After the government’s reversal, PM Oli stated that the government will ensure responsible social media usage.
