Pakistan has established a new, highly influential military position: Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). Field Marshal Asim Munir has been appointed to this inaugural role, significantly consolidating military authority. This new position, unlike the previous Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, oversees all three branches of the armed forces—Army, Navy, and Air Force—and directs the National Strategic Command responsible for nuclear assets.

Crucially, a constitutional amendment has removed the previous retirement age limit for this role. While the Army Chief historically retired at 64, the CDF position is appointed for five-year terms, with the possibility of multiple five-year extensions at the government’s discretion. This move allows for extended tenures, potentially creating a more stable, long-term military leadership.

The President’s office confirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recommendation for Munir to simultaneously hold the CDF and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) positions was approved. This dual role makes Munir the preeminent military figure in Pakistan, wielding unprecedented command.

This significant appointment follows considerable anticipation regarding the Prime Minister’s willingness to grant increased power to the military leadership. The notification for the CDF’s appointment was slated for November 29, coinciding with the end of Munir’s term as Army Chief.

In a related development, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu received a two-year service extension, effective March 19, 2026. The President conveyed his best wishes to both officers for their service.
