Protests Erupt in Nepal Over Social Media Ban, Demonstrators Storm Parliament

In Nepal, a ban on social media applications sparked intense protests across the country, with thousands of Gen-Z youth taking to the streets in Kathmandu and other cities. Hundreds of protesters breached the parliament building, leading to the deployment of tear gas and, reportedly, gunfire by the police. To prevent further incursions, Nepal police imposed a curfew around the residences of the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister. The demonstrators voiced their discontent, blaming the government for unemployment, corruption, and economic recession. Protests also occurred in Biratnagar, Bharatpur, and Pokhara. The government, under Prime Minister K.P. Oli, had prohibited access to 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Reddit, and X, on September 4th. Young people have expressed concerns that the ban will adversely affect their studies and businesses.
