Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron held a phone conversation, marking their first direct communication since September 2022. The discussions centered on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and escalating tensions in the Middle East. Putin conveyed that the Ukraine conflict stemmed from Western policies that disregarded Russia’s security interests. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive, long-term resolution based on new territorial realities.

The leaders also discussed the recent escalation between Israel and Iran, agreeing that diplomacy is the only path forward and pledged to coordinate their positions. They acknowledged their shared responsibility to maintain peace, security, and the global nuclear non-proliferation regime. The importance of respecting Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy and fulfilling its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty was highlighted.

France, a key supporter of Kyiv, has provided significant military aid. However, recent statements from Macron suggest a shift in position, acknowledging limits on weapon supplies and proposing dialogue with Moscow as part of broader European security talks.
