Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, successfully obtained Iran’s approval for a US-proposed ceasefire in the conflict with Israel. This agreement came after a phone call with Iranian officials, as part of negotiations. The discussions followed a communication from former US President Donald Trump to Qatar’s Emir. Trump informed the Emir that Israel had accepted the ceasefire proposal and sought Qatar’s assistance in convincing Tehran to agree.

The high-level talks occurred shortly after Iran launched missile strikes on US military installations in Qatar and Iraq. Subsequently, Trump announced on social media that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ‘complete and total’ ceasefire, effective in approximately six hours. He stated that Iran would initiate the ceasefire, followed by Israel, leading to a complete cessation of hostilities within 24 hours. Trump urged both countries to maintain peace during the overlapping ceasefire windows. He also expressed congratulations to both nations for their ‘Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence’ in ending what he termed the ’12 Day War’.

The conflict began on June 13 with Israel’s airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, resulting in Iran’s retaliatory drone and missile campaign targeting Israeli facilities. Tensions further escalated after US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, leading to Iran’s missile attacks on US military bases.
