The population of Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi Muslims in London has experienced a significant surge in recent years. According to 2021 data, approximately 1.3 million Muslims reside in London, constituting around 15% of the city’s total population. The largest segment of this population comprises individuals originating from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India.

Across the entirety of the UK, the Muslim population is roughly 2.7 million, with nearly 40% concentrated in London alone, which amounts to over 1.08 million people. Of these, approximately 68% are of Asian descent. Areas like Tower Hamlets, Newham, Redbridge, and Waltham Forest are their major hubs, with Muslim populations exceeding 30% in some areas.

Historical ties between the UK and India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have facilitated this growth. Post-independence, and particularly during the 1960s and 70s, a considerable influx of laborers, factory workers, and immigrants arrived in London. This trend continued with the arrival of refugees, students, and traders. These individuals are now leaving their mark in various sectors of London, including business, politics, and education.

Muslims in London are actively involved in businesses, including catering, textiles, taxi services, healthcare, and local council activities. Mosques, food establishments, markets, and cultural events contribute to the community’s visible presence. In numerous areas, Muslim leaders and councilors have been elected.

Tensions occasionally arise between different communities in London, often stemming from religious, political, and identity-related factors. Concerns have been voiced by London’s native population regarding the increasing immigrant population. A rally called ‘Unite the Kingdom’ took place in London on September 13th, drawing over 100,000 participants. More than 150,000 people took to the streets, chanting slogans against immigrants and Muslims. Violent clashes resulted in injuries to 26 police officers. Protesters voiced their opposition to illegal immigration into Britain, demanding the deportation of undocumented immigrants.
