Sikyong Penpa Tsering, the President of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, has strongly criticized China’s involvement in Tibetan religious matters, particularly concerning the selection of the next Dalai Lama. He expressed deep concern over China’s attempts to dictate the spiritual leadership of Tibet, questioning the government’s motives and its disregard for religious freedom, especially as preparations are underway for the Dalai Lama’s upcoming birthday celebrations. Tsering highlighted the historical context of the Golden Urn, challenging China’s claims that it is essential for recognizing the Dalai Lama. He emphasized that the Golden Urn was introduced in 1793, long after several Dalai Lamas had already been recognized and was rarely used in the selection of the 9th and 11th Dalai Lamas. This follows China’s reiteration that the central government in Beijing must approve the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has stated that Tibetan Buddhism is a religion with Chinese characteristics and that the reincarnation process should follow traditional methods, including the use of the Golden Urn. Tsering also addressed the importance of youth leadership, religious freedom, and international participation in the Dalai Lama’s birthday celebrations. He underscored the importance of building future leadership and encouraging youth participation in the Tibetan movement. Furthermore, he addressed the scale of participation in the upcoming birthday celebrations. Finally, Tsering addressed the sensitive issue of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation, stating that the decision rests solely with the Gaden Phodrang and that Tibetans will never accept China’s political interference in this matter. He also accused the Chinese government of systematically attempting to erase Tibetan identity by targeting its language and religion. The Dalai Lama has agreed to continue the institution of the Dalai Lama, confirming that the Gaden Phodrang Trust will have exclusive authority in selecting the next Dalai Lama.
