Following the coup that toppled President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year rule in Syria in December 2024, hopes were raised for a better and more accountable governance. However, a recent report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights presents a contrasting picture.

The report indicates that between the fall of the old regime on December 8, 2024, and August 6, 2025, 9,889 people have died in Syria. These deaths resulted from ongoing violence, atrocities committed by both domestic and foreign forces, and widespread security instability. The report reveals that 7,449 of the deceased were civilians, including 396 children and 541 women. These figures underscore the fragility of the situation in Syria and the dire plight of the most vulnerable segments of society.
