President Donald Trump has defended the United States’ decision to resume nuclear weapons testing, asserting that other nations, including Pakistan, Russia, and China, are actively engaged in such activities. Speaking in a recent interview, Trump highlighted that while these countries test, their actions often go unreported due to their less open societies. “We’re an open society. We’re different. We talk about it,” Trump explained, suggesting that the US must also test to keep pace and ensure readiness. He pointed to ongoing tests by North Korea and others as a primary justification for the US to follow suit after a hiatus of over 30 years. Trump emphasized that the US possesses a vast arsenal, sufficient to ‘blow up the world 150 times,’ and that resuming testing is a necessary measure given the global landscape. This stance comes after Russia announced its own trials of advanced nuclear-capable systems, prompting concerns about a new arms race. Trump reiterated that with other nations testing, it is “appropriate” for the US to do the same.
