In a remarkable political turn, President Donald Trump met with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House, just weeks after a contentious election campaign. The two had publicly exchanged harsh words, with Trump labeling Mamdani a “100% communist lunatic” and Mamdani criticizing Trump’s administration as “authoritarian.” However, their November 21st meeting focused on shared concerns for New York City, including housing affordability, grocery prices, and utility costs – issues central to both their electoral victories.

President Trump, standing beside Mamdani in the Oval Office, stated, “We’re going to help him so that everyone’s dream comes true — a strong and very safe New York.” Mamdani expressed appreciation for the meeting’s focus on common goals rather than disagreements, remarking, “our meeting didn’t focus on the disagreements… but also focused on our shared purpose of serving New Yorkers.”

Trump suggested that the responsibilities of executive office can change individuals, predicting Mamdani might “actually surprise some conservatives.” When questioned about past criticisms of Trump, Mamdani emphasized their current shared objective of making New York more affordable.

The meeting comes after a particularly acrimonious campaign. Trump had previously endorsed an independent candidate and questioned Mamdani’s viability, even threatening federal funding. This White House encounter signifies a dramatic shift, illustrating how political rivalries can evolve into pragmatic partnerships when common objectives emerge, potentially reshaping the landscape for New York City and beyond.
