Former US President Donald Trump stated that he had heard India might cease purchasing oil from Russia, calling it a ‘good step’ if true. This statement came after Washington imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports due to the country’s ongoing trade with Russia, including the purchase of crude oil and military equipment. Trump indicated that additional penalties against India were under consideration.

During an interview, Trump responded to a query about potential penalties and a possible conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that India’s energy procurement decisions are based on national interests and market dynamics. The MEA added that it wasn’t aware of any specific developments regarding Indian oil companies stopping imports from Russia. These remarks followed criticisms from the United States, including Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, regarding India’s import of discounted Russian crude oil despite Western sanctions. Trump had previously criticized India’s economic ties with Russia, labeling both economies as ‘dead,’ while later suggesting that negotiations with India were underway.
