In her resignation letter, Rayner expressed deep regret for not consulting tax specialists, emphasizing that she never intended to pay incorrect taxes. She took full responsibility, stating the decision was made considering the report’s recommendations and the impact on her family. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer accepted Rayner’s resignation, acknowledging her decision. Rayner held significant roles in the Labour government, including Deputy PM and Housing portfolio responsibility. She was a prominent figure within the party, often criticizing Conservative leaders on tax compliance issues. The Labour Party will now need to elect a new deputy leader.
