Angela Rayner, the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, has resigned from her position following scrutiny over her tax payments related to a property purchase. An independent investigation revealed that Rayner did not fully adhere to the ministerial code of conduct. The report acknowledged her integrity and dedication but stated that she should have sought expert tax advice. The controversy revolves around a property in Hove, where discrepancies in tax payments were identified. Rayner admitted to underpaying taxes when purchasing the apartment. Reports indicate she saved approximately £40,000 (around 47 lakh rupees) in stamp duty tax. In her resignation letter, Rayner expressed deep regret for not consulting tax specialists, emphasizing that she never intended to pay incorrect taxes. She took full responsibility, stating the decision was made considering the report’s recommendations and the impact on her family. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer accepted Rayner’s resignation, acknowledging her decision. Rayner held significant roles in the Labour government, including Deputy PM and Housing portfolio responsibility. She was a prominent figure within the party, often criticizing Conservative leaders on tax compliance issues. The Labour Party will now need to elect a new deputy leader.
