The United Kingdom, known for its traditional wheat and barley crops, is embarking on an unusual agricultural experiment. Nadine Mitschunas, from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, is leading the effort to cultivate paddy rice in Britain, a venture initially met with surprise. Despite the UK’s temperate climate, which typically doesn’t favor rice cultivation, this project aims to explore the potential of rice farming in a rapidly changing climate. The experiment, conducted in partnership with farmer Sarah Taylor, involves cultivating rice in small paddy fields. With Britain experiencing its hottest summer since 1884, researchers are assessing the viability of rice as a future crop, anticipating that rising average temperatures could make it a more suitable option.
