Beijing’s voice echoed strongly in New York as Fu Cong, China’s envoy to the UN, addressed the Security Council’s open session on Middle East issues. On January 28, he categorically stated that problems in the region cannot be fixed through the barrel of a gun, warning that military interventions risk catastrophic escalation.

Describing the atmosphere as one of persistent conflict and rising hostilities, Fu highlighted Iran’s right to self-determination. As a sovereign state, Iran must handle its domestic matters without external interference, he stressed. China pledges full support for Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial wholeness amid these challenges.

Turning to key players like the US, Fu expressed hope that they would prioritize appeals from regional stakeholders and the world at large. Rather than exacerbating the crisis, tangible steps toward de-escalation and stability are essential, he noted.

Fu reiterated China’s dedication to multilateralism in the region. By honoring the will of local populations and validating concerns from neighboring states, China aims to contribute positively to enduring peace in the Middle East.
