Beijing’s voice echoed strongly at the UN Security Council as Deputy Representative Sun Lei urged nations worldwide to unite against terrorism. Delivered on February 4 during a key open session, her speech outlined a roadmap for collective action in an era of persistent threats.

‘Adhering to principles of equality, multifaceted cooperation, and enduring security is essential,’ Sun stated. She condemned any tolerance for terrorism, calling out selective approaches and double standards that undermine global efforts. Unity, she argued, is the key to building a formidable force against these dangers.

Current hotspots drew particular attention, with Sun naming the Islamic State, Al-Qaeda, and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement as active menaces to Afghanistan and surrounding regions. China presses the Afghan interim authorities to launch robust operations to eradicate these groups.

Enhancing ties among Central Asian countries, the SCO, and Afghanistan forms a cornerstone of China’s strategy. This includes tackling transnational terror threats and aiding economic growth to uproot extremism at its source. Sun pledged China’s full support for joint strikes on terrorism.

The remarks signal China’s deepening involvement in multilateral forums, pushing for practical measures over rhetoric. With Afghanistan’s fragile transition ongoing, such calls for solidarity could shape future counter-terrorism dynamics on the world stage.
