Following a 12-day conflict where Israel reportedly eliminated many of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s closest associates, including high-ranking figures like General Vagheeri and others, Iran has seen significant shifts in its power structure. With the deaths of approximately eight top commanders, the question of who Khamenei would elevate to positions of influence became a subject of intense speculation in Tehran. The Supreme Leader addressed these discussions by releasing a list on August 7th, revealing his chosen representatives.

The National Security Council holds a paramount position in Iran’s governmental framework, responsible for major decisions that are ultimately approved by the Supreme Leader. After the recent conflict, the Security Council underwent reorganization. Khamenei appointed three representatives to the council, individuals considered to be his closest allies. These representatives, chosen by the Supreme Leader, will now vote and advocate on his behalf during Security Council meetings.

The three individuals Khamenei has selected are Ali Larijani, Ali Shamkhani, and Ahmadian. Ali Larijani has previously served as a representative to the Security Council, holding the position of secretary from 2005 to 2007. He is known for his hardline views and is considered to be in Khamenei’s favor, although he had been somewhat sidelined in recent years. Now, in the wake of the deaths of older loyalists, Khamenei has brought Larijani back to the forefront.

Ali Shamkhani, who also survived an attack during the conflict, is known for his reformist views. He has previously served as secretary of the Security Council and held the position of Iran’s defense minister. Ahmadian, who was the secretary of the Security Council until now, has been a trusted figure within Khamenei’s inner circle, managing affairs behind the scenes. He served as deputy commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard during the Iran-Iraq War, bringing considerable experience in military and defense matters.
